Page Mill Winery was founded in 1976 by Dick Stark, who enjoyed a successful career selling industrial lasers. After visiting Europe, he wanted to make his own wine in California, and settled in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This area proved to be too remote, so about two decades ago he decided to relocate to the Livermore Valley district – where the famous Wente family calls home.
Dick’s son Dane studied winemaking in California, and reincorporated the winery in its new home by 2004. This had the twin benefits of easy access to the tasting room, where many sales are made, plus ideal grape sources in the Livermore Valley. The Chardonnay comes from the Chandler Vineyard in the eastern section of the Livermore Valley; the Zinfandel is grown in Lodi, and Syrah, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon are all grown locally.
These are all polished wines; identifiably Californian but tending to be European in style. The winery’s limited production of 3,000 cases a year makes it ideal for my selective portfolio.
