Description:
Bodegas PEDRO LUIS MARTINEZ is one of the best known names within the D.O. Jumilla, in southeast Spain. It is a small family winery whose ownership is still in hands of fourth generation descendants of the founder. The winery was established in 1870 when Mr. Roque Martinez formally established a business for trading wines in bulk, taking advantage of the current international business climate. At that time, phylloxera ruined vineyards in France, and producers there had to search for supply from several Spanish producing regions, Jumilla being one of them.
This prompted the first commercial winery in Jumilla. Today, the location of the cellar still remains in the same original site - after extensions, refurbishments and upgrades of the machinery - right in the centre of the town. This circumstance makes the winery especially picturesque, and it is usual for the cellar to receive visits of groups of tourists or wine-lovers interested in discovering the winery, which participates in the wine tourism program “Ruta del Vino” (Wine Route).
The winery started the business by trading with bulk wines bought from other wineries, but as time went by, the winery engaged in producing its own wines. These wines were historically table wines or wines for sale in bulk, of low added value, yet always with high quality standards. As a proof of this commitment to quality by PEDRO LUIS MARTINEZ SA, we could mention the sweet wine presented by the winery to the wine contest at the 1929 Universal Exposition in Barcelona which was awarded with the “Gran Premio” (Grand Prix) This was really a success for the wine industry of Jumilla and, obviously, for the winery. Nowadays we still make some of this historic sweet wine, as a proud supplement to our regular production.
Nevertheless, the most important event in recent years took place in 1999, when the winery started producing and selling its own bottled wines under the trademark “Alceño”. These wines are elaborated from native grape varieties such as the predominant Monastrell (red grape) along with foreign grapes, such as Tempranillo, Syrah or Macabeo (white grape), under the philosophy of producing premium quality wines, a goal that we believe we have achieved after many years bottling our own wines and the many medals and prizes awarded to our wines in a number of competitions, both national and international.
Since then, the range of our bottled wines has grown considerably. Currently, our offer of wines under the brand name Alceño has 7 wines of the highest quality, as the many prizes and medals achieved can confirm. We also have the brand name Romeo, under which we produce Monastrell wines at exceptionally good value.
