Description:
Château de Plassan is an exceptionally beautiful property in the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux district. Located in the township of Tabanac about twelve miles southeast of the city of Bordeaux, the estate belongs to the Brianceau family and enjoys a rich history.
The château itself was constructed in Palladian style two centuries ago, and today is used for official receptions and banquets. It was formerly owned by the Clauzel family, who also managed Beauregard in Pomerol and Citran in the Médoc, before the present owners acquired it in 1986. The Brianceaus have done much to restore the château itself, and particularly the vineyard, which had not been replanted for many years.
This is a relatively large estate for the area. It lies on a well-exposed parcel along the Côtes, ideally combining chalk, gravel and clay. There are some 100 acres of vines, 80% producing red wines and 20% white. The principal red cépage is Merlot (60%), with the balance Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The whites are made from 50% Sémillon and 40% Sauvignon Blanc, with a little Muscadelle. About 5,000 cases of red wine are produced annually, under the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation.
Recently the winemaker, Gilles Brianceau, decided to release a deluxe version of the white wine after some barrel aging in new oak. This is bottled in a special oblong Bordeaux bottle and is crafted in the manner of a good white Graves, with soft vanilla flavors in the background. The regular Bordeaux blanc is less costly, sees no oak and is given a relatively early bottling to preserve its freshness.
Recent vintages have been awarded medels at the Concours des Grands Vins de France in Mâcon, the Concours Général Agricole de Paris, the Concours de Bordeaux Vins d'Aquitaine, and the influential Guide Hachette.
