Description:
Alwin Römer founded the winery in 1950, associated with his wine-brokerage business Stein in Kinheim on the Mosel. Thus the name Römer-Stein is still used to describe the family’s activities, which is now in its third generation and has been associated with winegrowing on the Mosel for over 350 years.
The winery today includes about 6 hectares of vineyards. 85% lies in steep terraced vineyards typical of the best sites in the Mittel Mosel. The shale-slate composition of these vineyards gives the Riesling its special mineral flavors and complexity. Riesling is the chief variety grown, but there is also some Müller-Thurgau [Rivaner], Weißburgunder and Kerner as a supplement. The Rosenberg vineyard grows some especially fine Rieslings, sold in the Kabinett grade.
Modern fruity wines are the goal of the winery, whose direction is now in the hands of young Marcus Stein. His grandfather Römer’s quality traditions endure. An optimal grape-selection is still carried out, so that fresh, attractive and balanced wines are produced. Formerly a large part of the harvest was aged in traditional wood-barrels, but this is now performed in steel tanks. Through modern cold fermentation and filter technology, fruity wines with harmonious acidity are the result.
For top wines, experience shows that extended barrel aging adds further complexity to a noble wine that must necessarily spend some further time ripening in the bottle.
