Description:
Domaine Seilly is located in the picturesque medieval town of Obernai (Bas-Rhin). Obernai is the birthplace of Sainte-Odile, the patron saint of Alsace, and a high mountain peak just to the west, in the Vosges, is named after Sainte-Odile. Perfectly preserved and rich in history, Obernai is the most frequently visited town in Alsace. Several noted winegrowers have their headquarters there, along with world famous Kronenbourg beer.
Domaine Seilly was founded by Alphonse Seilly in 1865, and over the next five generations the domaine expanded to over 30 acres, including the Cru Schenkenberg, one of the most ideally situated vineyard sites in Alsace. Schenkenberg rises up as a beautifully exposed outcropping north of Obernai, and is ideal for Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Sylvaner. Its clay-chalk soils face southeast, affording the regular production of Vendanges Tardives (late harvested wines) and Sélection des Grains Nobles (selection of noble grapes). These rarities are the pride of Alsace. Domaine Seilly also has the exclusive production of the “Pistolet” (pistol wine). This wine was famous in the middle Ages, and draws its name to a visit by Emperor Ferdinand I to Obernai in 1562. When the mayor of Obernai told him that it was reserved for local consumption, the emperor handed the mayor a pistol, suggesting that he use it “on someone less well mannered!” This intriguing wine is now a registered trademark of Domaine Seilly.
Since 1990, Marc Seilly has managed the family business, and recently changed to new packaging so as to reflect more contemporary designs. They make a full range of wines, from the basic series up to the late harvested rarities. There are three series: Satisfaction, the most basic wines; Expression, describing wines produced from old vines; and Connaisseur, the late-harvested rarities, which encompass over a decade of vintages.
