Located outside the city of Cividale in the Colli Orientali section of Friuli, Cantina Tavagnacco enjoys a thirty year tradition of winegrowing in the area. The property was established at the turn of the century by Count Ugo di Manzano; today his granddaughter Giovanna Tavagnacco owns the estate, and Paolo Nitti is the director and winemaker.

From the vineyards, the Friulian Alps can be clearly seen. These mountains protect the vines from strong north winds, and form a natural boundary to the region. This select area of the Friuli D.O.C. is famous for its racy, scented white wines, but the climate also favors the production of classic red wines, many of which are given barrique aging. Pinot Grigio is an important variety in the area, and represents a large segment of the production; the Friuli variety Refosco dal peduncolo rosso is one of their specialties, with its fragrant bouquet and cherryish flavor; their Tocai Friulano is typically ripe, with a flowery nose and interesting flavor. Tavagnacco is particularly proud of its rare Pignolo gentile, a red variety grown only in this area of Friuli, with its unusual, almost mysterious flavor and bouquet. Finally the Friuli specialty Picolit, a delicious sweet white wine grown nowhere else in Italy, reaches its apogee in the Cividale area. All wines benefit from the Colli Orientali del Friuli appellation, which relates to the best climate and soils in the province.

A recent visit highlighted two outstanding, complementary wines: the Cabernet Riserva, with excellent color and depth; and the Sauvignon Blanc, a fresh and especially clean example of the variety, vinified in a Loire Valley style. In the past few years, the Italian press has been very generous to Tavagnacco, with reviews appearing in the prestigious Guida dei Vini Italiani by Luca Maroni, the influential Gambero Rosso, and Il Mio Vino. The latest vintages await a similar reception by the American press and consumers.
