Weingut Schmitz-Berres

Germany > Mosel > Urzig

Description:
The Schmitz-Berres estate resulted from the marriage of two famous Mosel winegrowing families, and the present director, Hans-Josef Schmitz, now runs the estate with his wife Elisabeth. They are presently modernizing the picturesque cellars, now over 400 years old, to allow more storage space and to assist in the aging process. They also run a bed-and-breakfast inn, which affords a relaxed stay in an idyllic setting.

Schmitz-Berres is a small but respected producer of Ürziger Würzgarten and Erdener Treppchen, two of the Mittel Mosel's most famous vineyards. Grown on a rocky promontory with an unsurpassed view of the Mosel Valley, the Riesling enjoys a special combination of soil and climate that makes these vineyards highly prized by connoisseurs. The Würzgarten's typical spicy flavor is reflected in its name, relating to a porous soil that is rich in minerals. Treppchen, or "little staircase," relates to the steep terraced vineyards on which it is grown. These precipitous plots mean a lot of hard work for the winegrower, but they yield rich rewards for German wine lovers. Typically the wines are big and full-flavored, balanced by a delightful acidity that allows them to age to perfection. A full range of wines is offered: the drier wines are scented and sprightly, but the fuller Spätlesen and Auslesen truly represent the winemaker's art. This marks their debut in the United States.
