Staatsweingut Bad Kreuznach

Germany > Nahe > Kreuznach

Description:
Founded in 1900 by the Prussian government, the Staatsweingut (state-owned winery) Bad Kreuznach is one of the famous Staatsweingüter in the Rheinland-Pfalz and a top producer of Riesling wines on the Nahe. It is officially part of the Dienstleistungszentrum Ländlicher Raum Rheinhessen-Nahe-Hunsrück, commonly abbreviated as DLR, and is associated with a famous school of viticulture. Currently the Staatsweingut Bad Kreuznach owns 47 acres of vineyard, exclusively in the famous winegrowing towns of Bad Kreuznach and Norheim, with one-half planted in Riesling. Udo Bamberger is the administrator, and with winemaker Rainer Gieß, who studied at Geisenheim, they have totally revamped this historic winery.

Because the winery is owned by the State of Rheinland-Pfalz, there are lower profit margins than privately-held wineries and the wines are exceptional values. Top sites such as Kreuznacher Kahlenberg, which is a microclimate above the city of Bad Kreuznach; and their exclusive top Lage Norheimer Kafels, with its light mineral tones, regularly produce some of the Nahe's best wines. Recently they have been honored with the highest awards of the Landwirtschaftskammer (regional) and the Deutsches Landwirtschafts Gesellschaft (DLG), which have bestowed gold medals and grand prix to many of the top wines. The Staatsweingut Bad Kreuznach is listed in the GAULT-MILLAU directory of Germany's leading wine estates, and is particularly celebrated for their late-harvested rarities: feted in exceptional years like 2005 and 2007 with a double gold medal award. Frank Johnson is their first New York importer.
